The month of June ended with the Staples Motley American Legion team winning two more games but suffering their second loss of the season, losing after a seventh inning, walk -off home run at Crosslake. Jordan Riewer pitched a fine game July 2 at Crosslake for Staples Motley, going all the way, getting seven strike outs and walking only two batters. More ... Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of the Staples and Motley area recently participated in a "BSA 61 Fun Day Monday" at Dower Lake. The Scouts took part in swimming, fishing off the pier, soccer, baseball, first aid and a climbing wall. More ... Construction on the Bemidji to Guthrie segment of the Paul Bunyan State Trail is complete and the trail is now open to the public. The trail is now paved for approximately 11.5 miles between the two communities, primarily along the old Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad grade. Striping of the new road surface was one of the last touches last week for Wadena County Road 30 north of Staples. Residents of that area and golfers at The Vintage are enjoying a completely refurbished roadway from the Central Lakes College campus to the Crow Wing River bridge. Approximately 1,500 feet of the roadway was washed out by flooding this spring. The road had been scheduled for resurfacing in 2010, but the washout and complications with other projects moved County Road 30 up on the priority list.
