Public invited to 'dig' with students
Rich Paper, who has coordinated the local end of the U of M project, explained it is designed to not just be a research project, but also to educate the general public how such work is done.
The U of M students will be sharing their knowledge during a formal training day on June 29.
People from the area - adults and young adults - are invited to sign up for two sessions from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m. They will learn the basics of excavation, Hayes said, and will get to do some actual work, too. "They will get dirty," Hayes said.
Trainees will get a real look at actual archaeological field work, Hayes said. Rather than using a shovel and spade, they will be using hand tools such as a trowel and dentist picks, she added.
Those interested in signing up can contact Paper at 218-631-2617. The training day is limited to four people per session, he said. "There are still some places open," he said Monday morning of this week. There is no charge to do this. If there is enough interest, they are considering a second training day.
