Relay for Life' raises over $32,000

Luminary Hundreds of paper bag luminaries lined the Staples Elementary School track at the annual Relay for Life event, serving as a reminder of friends and family members who have been affected by cancer.
A total of $32,686 was raised at the Staples Relay for Life Event held June 5, with monies going to the American Cancer Society.

There were 15 relay teams participating and at least 20 other sponsors who gave donations to help in the fight against cancer.

The Staples Bakery & Convenience Store team received a 'Silver Award' after bringing in $5,118.

'Bronze Awards' were given to Amateur Athletes, earning $4,188; Faith's Fancy Faithful Feet, $4,056; and Lakewood Health System, $4,070.

Other participating teams included Ann's Angels, Blanche's Buddies, Bosom Buddies, Curves, First International Bank & Trust, Gramma's Gang, Methodist Circuit Riders, Raiders, Sacred Heart Church, Staples Alliance Church; and K. Madsen/ Maryann Trantina.

Two auctions were held during the Relay; with $1,545 raised during the live auction; and $868 raised during the silent auction. Auctioneer Walt Trantina donated his services. Monies were also collected for the relay thanks to a bake sale; and with the sale of luminaries.

Additional donations for the American Cancer Society were received from the Staples Motley schools; and other businesses, church and civic organizations in the Staples and Motley area.

The 2010 Relay for Life event will be held June 11.
