Staples Motley American Legion squad is 4-0
      The Staples Motley American Legion baseball team was 4-0 for the season after action this week. The Legion team in their first week won two over Parkers Prairie, notched a 6-4 win over Bertha-Hewitt and a 17-0 win in six innings over Cass Lake.

      On the first weekend of June, I was a spectator in St. Paul for the Minnesota State High School Track & Field championships. My son and several of his teamm ates were fort unate enough to qual- ify and thus end their high school athletic careers in memorable fashion.

SM Track and Field sound system
      The Staples Motley Track and Field Club was awarded an Operation Round Up grant through the Todd-Wadena Community Trust for $650 to fund a 250-watt amplifier portion of the planned speaker system for the track facility. The equipment was mounted and used at local track meets this spring.

Spring brings out fawns, bears and beavers
      Bears, beaver, deer and other wildlife are active this time of year in northern Minnesota, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The DNR urges people to leave fawns and other wildlife alone. Jeff Lightfoot, DNR Northeast Region wildlife manager, offers tips for dealing with nuisance wildlife.

New fishing pole
     Five-year-old Jack Saulsbury and his dad, Ryan, enjoyed t "Father & Son Pasta Night" held at the Stomping Grounds in Staples. Sponsored by the Friends of the Staples Library group, the free event included a lasagna dinner, a slide presentation by Kerry Lindgren (Staples Motley High School teacher); and free prizes, including a new fishing pole for each participant. Brittany Brenny named top runner at UND
      The University of North Dakota named Brittany Brenny, a Staples Motley High School graduate, as the Fighting Sioux track team's top track athlete for the 2009 tracks eason Women's track and field coach Dick Clay named the top two awards for his team, awarding honors to Brenny for track and to senior Jessica Clausnitzer from Bismarck, N.D.

MN DNR teams with DQ to reward boaters
      Minnesota kids wearing life jackets while boating this summer will not only be staying safe, but also could be rewarded with an ice cream treat. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has partnered with Dairy Queen to provide a PFD Panda Award certificate to youngsters who are observed by conservation officers (CO) wearing a life jacket while boating.
