City officials and community members met for a short ground breaking program at noon Thursday, May 28, at the new city hall /library construction site. Mayor Chris Etzler noted the history of 10 years of discussion and planning that had taken place. “We have looked at virtually every option and every site in the city prior to deciding to build new and selecting this location,” he said. He noted the process has involved both the current and previous city councils and mayors, the council’s Government Center Task Force, the Friends of the Library group, Great River Regional Library system, current and previous city staff and consulting architects and builders. Present for the ceremony were members of the Staples City Council, the Staples Economic Development Authority, Friends of the Library, Great River Regional Library officials and Northway Construction Services, construction management firm hired by the city. Sarah Larson and some of her third grade students also attended.
