The Other Day

- o - by Ruth Brill

. . . I checked my calendar and began my preparations for the next exciting event. I was having difficulty keeping my May schedule under control.

We survived May Day, even without fresh garden flowers to pick. But, one can substitute paper flower or artificial plastic flowers to greet your friends. Just place the flowers by the door, push the door bell and disappear. This was lots of fun as a kid.

Getting the 2009 fishing season opened meant spring had finally arrived and everyone was ready to comply, get on the lake and catch some fish. It is a tradition of May.

I recently learned from a TV advertisement that May is "skin cancer awareness" month. The importance of using sun block every day and avoiding sun burns and tanning beds was stressed. I was already stressed, but I made a note of the reminders. Yet another advertisement added to the already cluttered calendar by announcing May as "Maytag month." A super duper washing machine could be helpful by keeping the family in clean clothes for the merriment this month of May offers.

There are also two religious observances: Ascension Day (Christian) and Shavuot (Jewish). There are two historical days: Victoria Day for Canada and Memorial Day for the United States. Truly, I struggle to keep track of all of this information.

And, the day of all days in May is Mother's Day. As spring ushers in new growth and new life, it seems appropriate to remember our mom and express our appreciation to her.

Throw in a few graduations, open houses, weddings… the month of May is jam packed.

May your "days of May" continue to fill your life with many opportunities for exciting entertainment.
