Cardinals down Wolverines 5-2
Staples Motley's players only lost two matches as the Cardinals defeated the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines 5-2 in a Mid- State Conference dual tennis meet April 23, at Wadena.
The Cards won the first three singles matches and lost o n ly at first doubles to record their sixth dual meet win of the year against just two losses.
Second singles Mike Lindaman didn't surrender a point in his 6-0, 6-0 victory and No. 1 singles Jordan Peterson won 6-1, 6-0. No. 3 singles Guthrie Coughlin won 6-2, 6-1.
Young second and third doubles teams won for the Cards, including Matt Spar and Josh Solway at second and Shane Suess and Nick Johnson at third.
The Cardinal first doubles team of Adam Cox and Grant Longbella took a hard fought, three set loss, 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 .
Following that match, the opponents got a lot tougher for the Cards. SM lost 4-3 to Minnewaska on April 20 at home. At one and two singles Jordan Peterson and Mike Lindaman, along with first doubles team of Adam Cox and Longbella each won in two sets, but the Lakers took the other four match-ups.
The Thunder came to town April 21, downing the Cards 6-1, with both Minnewaska and Long Prairie potential future section foes.
Lindaman won a 6-1, 6-7, (8-6) second singles match against Berent Uhlenkamp for the lone Cardinal win.
At Alex on April 24, Staples Motley dropped two 7-0 matches to host Alexandria and also to the Blake School, along with a 5-2 loss to Elk River. All three opponents are tennis power houses.
