WANTED: A few good volunteers

2009-04-30 / News

Kevin Grondahl and some others are looking for a few good people.

Staples, in conjunction with the MnDOT's Partnership program, is preparing to begin phase 2 of the landscaping along the new Highway 10.

Grondahl, director of the Staples Parks and Recreation department, said that in this phase, boulevard trees will be planted from 14th Street on the east end of town to just west of the depot.

Also included in this phase will be planting perennial flowering shrubs and grasses in the five planters along the highway. There are approximately 150 trees and many shrubs and grass plugs to be planted, Grondahl says.

Plant material and trees are scheduled to arrive on May 11. "We have made arrangements with Kerry Lindgren to have his conservation classes assist us with this effort," Grondahl said. "We are planning to do the planting between May 12-15. We are planning to work from 1-3 p.m. on any or all of these days (weather permitting) until we are finished.

He said work involved for this project includes enlarging the holes for the containerized trees planting, watering and mulching them. Work for the planters would include planting, watering, and mulching.

Volunteers should bring shovels, rakes and small spades (for planters).

Grondahl asks people to contact him ahead of time so he can have an idea of how many volunteers who be available for these work dates. 218-894-2553.
