Cardinal girls setting the pace in track

The Staples Motley girls track team ran in their first two outdoor meets last week and captured first place in both.

April 14, found the Lady Cardinal s in Pequot Lakes compet- ing against seven teams.

Last Thursday the girls traveled to Pillager for a larger meet, with 12 teams.

Due to illness, injury and ineligibility the Cardinals didn't have a full roster and weren't able to field players for all the events.

Still the girls did very well.

At the Pequot meet, the Cards had seven first place finishes, all points toward the team victory. Ashley Lisson took first in both the 100m and 200m dashes, Nikki Pearson was first in the 100m and 300m hurdles, Brooke Simonson in the long jump, Kaytlin Roth in the high jump and also the 4x8 relay team of Roth, Emily Fuhrman, Natasha Wenzel and Logan Peterson.

At Pillager on Thursday for the John Reimer Memorial Invitational there were 11 teams including Becker, Wadena-Deer Creek, Mille Lacs, Browerville-EV, Pillager, New York Mills, Ottertail Central, Pequot Lakes, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, and Bertha-Hewitt- Verndale.

She did not place in this 100 meter event but teammates Nikki and Kelly Pearson took second and fifth place. Despite the tough competition the Lady Cardinals took home another win. First place finishes included Ashley Lisson in the 100m dash, and the 4x1 relay team (Josie Pilgrim, Makala Wing, Kelly Reese, Ashley Lisson). Nikki Pearson placed second in the 100 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles. Lisson (200m dash), Liz Willgohs (pole vault) and Brooke Simonson (triple jump) all took second.

The Cards don't have much of a break from action; they ran on this past Tuesday in Long Prairie- Grey Eagle and will run again today in Wadena- Deer Creek.
