Planting celebration
Staples World photo by Tom Crawford Sebeka school students were among over 100 people gathered Tuesday afternoon to note a forestry milestone just north of Staples. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Forestry Division Tuesday celebrated the state forest nurseries one billionth tree seedling being planted on land owned by Todd and Glennda Erickson about 12 miles north of Staples near Wahoo Valley. DNR Commissioner Mark Holsten and Dave Epperly, head of the DNR's forestry division, each planted a tree, with Holsten's given the designation of the one billionth planted. The state's two forestry nurseries at Badoura and General Andrews (near Willow River) have been producing trees for over 80 years. A sign (background) noting this milestone was unveiled along Wadena County Road 7.
