Paul Matthews
Paul "Tony" Norman Matthews, 80, of Garrison, N.D. died April 4, 2009 at his home.
Funeral services were held April 9, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Garrison.
Arrangements were with the Thompson Funeral Home in Garrison.
Paul was born, Dec. 13, 1928, in Richmond, Wisc. and adopted by Harold and Alta (Lamb) Matthews. He grew up in the Poplar area where he attended elementary school. He attended two years of high school in Motley.
In 1945 and 1946 he traveled to the Ryder/Emmet area of North Dakota to work for various farmers as a seasonal worker. In 1947, he began working for Harold Ziegler until 1969. On Nov. 20, 1948 he married Valois Fitzgerald in Motley.
He served with the McLean County Sheriff's Department as a deputy until he retired in 1995.
Tony was an avid sportsman and hunter. He also enjoyed playing cards, particularly pinochle and cribbage, reading, western novels.
He is survived by three daughters, Viva (Andy) Simmons, Republic, Mo; Paula (Glenn) Schreiner, Max, N.D.; Lisa (Daryl) Kleyer, Williston, N.D.; four sons, John (Marlinda) Matthews, Brad Matthews, both of Garrison; Ron (LaVonne) Matthews, Fargo, N.D, Todd (Jenn) Matthews, Williston, N.D; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Greene, JoAnn Tucker and Marietta Matthews of Staples; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and one son, Terry.
