Cage season includes post season honors

The Staples Motley basketball Cardinals, who finished the year with 20 wins and nine losses, have been piling up some post season cage honors as well.

Cardinal guard Jordan Riewer last week was named to the Associated Press All State honorable mention list.

Riewer and two other Staples Motley Cardinal basketball players were also named to the Mid State All Conference team this year.

Riewer was joined on the lengthy all state honorable mention list by area players Mark Hoge of Crosby Ironton, Dan Kornbaum from Little Falls and Donny Tabery from Wadena-Deer Creek.

Riewer, a junior on the Cardinal team, was named the Mid State Conference's Most Valuable Player.

Joining Riewer on the all conference team were fellow juniors Derek Wolhowe and Jon Bristow.

Mark Hoge and Brock Tesdahl, both juniors from Crosby-Ironton were also named All Conference. Others included Michael Ward, Michael Goerges and Kurtis Moody from Pequot Lakes; Kevin Vaadeland from Park Rapids, Donny Tabery and Scott Syverson from Wadena-Deer Creek and Reed Oistad and Josh Stalberger from Detroit Lakes.

Riewer and Wolhowe both passed the career 1,000 points threshold during the 2008-09 season.

Riewer led his team in scoring, in assists, in turnovers and steals. He scored 569 points this year, averaging 19.6 points a game over 29 games. He pulled down 200 rebounds (6.9 rpg); had 173 assists ((5.0 apg); 125 turnovers (4.3 tog) eight blocks and 105 steals. Riewer made 50 percent of the field goals he attempted (201 of 404) and shot 40 percent on his three point attempts (76 of 188). Jordan was a 91 percent free throw shooter, hitting 91 of 100 attempts at the line. His high point game for the year was 37 points.

Derek Wolhowe was the team's second best scorer, hitting 465 points and averaging 16 points per game. He was also the team's leading rebounder, with 228 rebounds (a 7.9 rpg average). He had 62 assists, 102 turnovers, blocked eight shots and made 51 steals. He had a 27 point game for his high point game.

Derek shot 80 percent at the free throw line (97 of 127) and made 51 percent of his field goal shots, including 33 of 84 from long range (44 percent) and 114 of 209 shots (55 percent) for two points.

Jon Bristow was the team's next best scoring threat, making 255 points and averaging 8.8 a game. He added 103 rebounds, 19 blocks and 14 steals. Jon hit 196 of 184 two point attempts, for 52 percent shooting. He was 100 percent from long range, making his only attempt, and shot 73 percent at the free throw line ( 60 of 82). Jon's best game was 20 points.

Mike Lindaman, one of three seniors on coach Lynn Peterson's squad, averaged six points a game and scored 173 total (including a high of 14 points in one game). He had 100 rebounds 36 assists, 58 turnovers, six blocked shots and 32 steals.

Mike hit 37 of his 108 three point attempts (34 percent) and was 8 for 8 at the line.

Other seniors were Adam Cox and Jake Zetah.

Cox had 29 rebounds , scored 83 points and had 14 points in one game. He made 15 of 19 free throws and was a 51 percent shooter from the field.

Zetah had 60 rebounds and scored 57 points. He had nine assists, 13 turnovers, blocked two shots and took away the ball 17 times. Jake had one 10 point game.

Jordan Peterson scored 146 points for the Cardinals, getting 99 of them from his 33 three point shots (39 percent. He had 55 rebounds, 15 assists, 30 turnovers and 10 steals. A 15 point game was his best scoring night.

Gunner Johnson scored 133 points during the season, including a 15 point game. He had 65 rebounds, 42 assists, 39 turnovers and 34 steals.

Jason Johnson played in just 19 games and scored 126 points, for a 6.6 ppg. (and a 19 point high game). He had 59 rebounds and JJ blocked seven opponent shots.

Trevor Wentwor th played in 25 games and scored 92 points, had 13 assists, 17 steals and grabbed 32 rebounds playing his guard position. Trevor was 14 for 50 attempts from three-point range (28 percent) and six for six on free throws. He made 22 of 47 attempts from close range, for 47 percent shooting.

Also seeing action for the Cards were B-squad regulars Isaac Furhman (10 points, two rebounds) Brandon Larson (13 points, 15 rebounds) and sophomore Alex Jansson 2 points, 2 rebounds.
