The Other Day
. . . the anticipation of telling my husband the news was overwhelming. Would he welcome the opportunities, or would they drive him to distraction? Naturally, he will be happy and delighted, I thought, trying to convince myself.
"Dear, I think you should sit down. I have some news to share with you," I calmly said as I pulled out a chair for him.
"You didn't bang up the car, did you?" he questioned.
"No, of course not," I replied resenting his accusation.
I proceeded to give him the details of my morning. The doorbell rang, two men handed me an envelope, explained the contents, asked if I had any questions and left. I handed the letter to my husband.
As my husband began reading, he sat tall in his chair, read through all the pages and then read them again. By now his countenance was shifting from fear and dread to hope and possibilities.
"Are you sure this is for real?" he asked.
"As far as I can tell," I replied.
If you are thinking we won the lottery, we didn't. Maybe a long lost relative left us a nice inheritance? Wrong again. Did the letter indicate we won some kind of sweepstakes? That would be nice, but no, we didn't.
The fact is, nothing happened - no doorbell, no letter and no surprising news. It is an April Fool's Day joke. I think I am more disappointed than any of you. It sounded so real and would have been a nice surprise. And, naturally, we'd share any new found wealth if only it had happened. Maybe another time, but not on April 1.
May your day be filled with fun and imagination this April Fool's Day.
