Possible assault, DWI charges result of call
Formal charges are pending against two individuals whose argument on Sunday morning ended up on the streets of Staples.
Staples police reported they arrested two people following a domestic dispute call. The two were arrested and taken to the Todd County Jail in Long Prairie.
Officers were called to Ernie's Food Market and then to Orton's BP station, beginning at 7:26 a.m. Sunday. They found Crystal Lee Poppenga, 20, of Staples and Travis Daniel Petro, 18, of Wadena, who were involved in an argument. The officers reported that Petro was attempting to leave on foot while Poppenga pursued him with her 1995 Ford Escort.
In her effort to keep Petro from leaving her, police allege, Poppenga drove after him, striking the Highway 10 planter near Ernie's Market and also crashing into the Crystal Cleaners building next door, causing minor damage to both.
Police added that at one or more times, she made contact with her vehicle on Petro's body, but did not cause any significant injury. The two also had a physical altercation outside of the car, according to Officer Mark Wisch.
Police allege Poppenga faces possible charges of gross misdemeanor driving while intoxicated and possible felony assault (using the vehicle to strike Petro). Petro faces possible misdemeanor assault charges. The Todd County Attorney's office will determined which charges will be filed.
Officer Wisch was assisted by Todd County sheriff's deputies and the Minnesota DNR.
In a separate incident, a person with a Henning address was charged with attempting to purchase drugs using an altered prescription.
Police were called to Longbella Drug shortly after 10 a.m. Thursday, March 12. Chad Longbella told police that Sonya Renee Witkowski, 41, of Henning, had attempted to fill a prescription using an altered doctor's prescription.
She was released with charges pending after she gave a statement to police regarding the incident. Probable charges are controlled substance crime in the fifth degree.
