Sweet turn-out at Pillager School for 'Muffins with Mom"
Breakfast with mom Angie Kramer was one of several mothers (and a few grandmothers) who stopped by Pillager School March 13, to enjoy breakfast with their kids at the Staples World photo by Dawn Schimpp Timbs first-ever "Muffins with Mom" event held at the school. Pictured with Angie are her daughter Chloe (center) and son, Caleb. About 600 people enjoyed a free breakfast at Pillager School March 13, part of the first ever "Muffins with Mom" event hosted by the school.
"It's been a crazy morning," laughed High School Principal Scott Doss, bringing some 'hot off the griddle' pancakes out to the serving line.
Scott and other volunteers (parents, teachers and members of the community) had arrived bright and early to start getting breakfast ready.
"I think we had the pancake grills going at around six or six-thirty this morning," said school board member Shawn Hunstad. Scott and a few others had been there since three a.m., heating up sausages, he added.
"It's great to see such a huge turnout," Scott said, looking out over the school's gymnasium which was filled with students of all ages, accompanied by their mothers and grandmothers.
"We held a similar event last fall, 'Donuts with Dad,' that went over really well," said Sue Van Hal, Community Ed. secretary. "I'd say there were about 400 that attended that."
Scott Doss first came up with the idea of holding these events at the school, Sue said. "He had done something similar to this at a previous school and thought it would be neat to try it at Pillager," she added.
Much of the organizational work, Sue mentioned, had been done by Scott and Sue Turner, the school counselor.
'Muffins with Mom' was definitely a community event, Sue said, crediting a local church, the community center and the Kenniston family with loaning the needed tables and chairs for the day.
Sue also said that the school received monetary donations for the event; and borrowed roasters, syrup pitchers and griddles from everywhere and everyone.
"We had a lot of volunteers come by yesterday to make sure everything was set up," Sue said, "And both students and adults pitched in after breakfast to get the gym cleaned up again," she added.
"Most of the work was done by guys this time around, since it was an event for 'moms,'" Sue said.
Judging by the positive
response at both events, 'Muffins with Mom' and 'Donuts with Dad' will
probably be on the calendar next year as well.
