Girls cross country sixth in tough meet
      The Lady Cardinal Cross Country runners started out their season with a tough meet in Moorhead. A late summer day with high temps. posed a challenge, but the Cardinal girls came out with a sixth place finish in a field of 12 area teams. Moorhead took the win, with the Perham girls coming in second.

Weather takes toll on boys cc team
      The Cardinal Boys Cross Country team started out the season in a tough way at the Shocky Strand Invitational in Moorhead. Heat and tough competition challenged the boys and they took ninth in a field of eleven teams. Moorhead took the title with 47 points and the runners from Perham were close behind in second place.

Great weather for Railroad Days Dash
      The Second Annual Railroad Days Dash was held last Saturday morning. DQ Dilly bars, free massages from LHS, timing from Raceberry Jam, T-shirts and music, along with a great race course drew over 100 participants for this years event.

Gym remodeling moves volleyball to Motley gym
      The Cardinal Volleyball players are in action, even though they don’t have a home gym ready. Although the Staples Motley gym is still being remodeled the girls are playing where they can, which means rescheduling games to be played away or playing at the Motley Staples Middle School.

Domogalla second in triathalon
      Justin Domogalla, Staples, placed second in the male group for his age bracket at the Maple Grove Dare To Tri Olympic distance triathlon Aug. 28. His time of 2:29:15 also resulted in his placing 17 overall amongst all 167 participants. The overall winner was Devon Palmer of St. Paul who finished the triathlon in 2:00:07

Cardinals prove to be tournament tough
      Led by seasoned veterans winning three championships at one and two singles along with one doubles, the Cards fought hard to a second place team finish in the Highway-10S tournament held in Brainerd. Emma Koskiniemi and Maggie O’Keefe proved dominant in their three matches only losing five games.

Defense strong in first football scrimmages
      The Cardinal Football team was off to a great start this past week. They faced teams from Melrose, Minnewaska, Holdingford and Mound West Tonka in a scrimmage last Saturday. The defense proved strong, giving up just three touchdowns all day, with two of those coming against the JV defense.

2010 Baker 70’s hockey team
      Ben Baker, 81, a member of the 2010 Baker 70’s Hockey Team, sent this photo of his team made up of members 70-years-old or older (Baker is in the back row, last one on the right). This year’s team took home the silver medal after defeating Montreal, 7-1 and Can Am 3-0. They then fell to the Edmonton team, 5-1.

      Catch the shimmering wave of autumn color as it ripples across the state during the fall season. As they have for the past several years, Minnesota state park staff will provide weekly updates on the progression of color in the area, beginning this week, as a public service.

      Q : Can I take my 10 year-old daughter and nine year-old son pheasant or squirrel hunting? A : Resident youth under the age of 13 are allowed to hunt small game without a firearms safety certificate. The only requirements are that the youth must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and must obtain a free small game license.
